What considerations should you take when naming a guardian?

You are getting ready to leave on a vacation and your children are staying with grandparents for the week. The thought crosses your mind about who you would want to care for your children if something happened to you and your spouse. When you start thinking about these types of scenarios, it is an optimal time to begin coordinating an estate plan that discusses guardianship of your children in Minnesota. When you come to the part where you need to select a guardian, you can feel confident about your decision by taking some considerations before making a choice.

Chances are you would like your children to be raised by people who share similar values and beliefs as you and respect your wishes as a parent. According to the Huffington Post, here are some other important considerations to take:

  • Does the person live in a place nearby? Will your children be required to uproot completely and change schools, find new friends and adjust to a new environment?
  • Does the person have a similar parenting style to your own? Do they have other children that will require their attention as well?
  • Is the person familiar with your family, the things your family likes to do and how different relationships work between your children?
  • Is the person in a stable position financially, physically and emotionally to provide optimal care and support for your children?
