Understanding the value of having a health proxy

When it comes to estate planning, many people in Minnesota struggle to recognize how valuable certain components are until it is too late and they are incapacitated to make decisions that they have very strong opinions about. To avoid the disappointment and heartache of having to deal with the emotional distress that results from not being able to make one's own decisions, it is highly recommended that individuals are proactive about coordinating an estate plan that is customized to meet their needs and desires when the time comes that they are unable to make important choices on their own.

An important aspect of estate planning is reserving someone as a healthcare proxy. This process requires individuals to select someone they trust who will ultimately be in charge of making decisions related to the health of the person named on the estate plan. For example, if people desire to be at home when they are passing away, their health proxy will be responsible for seeing that this happens when they become incapacitated.

According to Forbes, having a proxy is important to help families eliminate unnecessary contention and disagreement about their loved one's health or who they would want making their decisions. Having a health proxy is a clear-cut way for people to designate someone who will be in charge in times of need to avoid fighting and disputes.

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement suggests that as families recognize that their loved one is getting sick and closer to incapacitation, it is helpful to begin incorporating discussions about the involvement of a health proxy with each medical decision that is made. This may ease the sick individual into the idea of having someone else make his or her decisions which will ultimately build trust.
